Jumhooree Party (JP) has said it is considering legal action against former president Abdulla Yameen over remarks he made about party leader Qasim Ibrahim and his son, Ibrahim Siyad Qasim.
In an interview with Adhadhu Online last week, Yameen claimed the pair were imprisoned in 2018 for bribing judges, responding to a statement about whether they had been wrongfully jailed.
He alleged that Siyad had paid USD 2.4 million to former Chief Justice Abdulla Saeed and former judge Ali Hameed to purchase property, and that both father and son had facilitated housing for judges in Malaysia and Hulhumale'.
JP spokesperson Ali Solih said the party’s legal team was reviewing potential action against Yameen for making unsubstantiated statements.
“JP lawyers are looking into what legal action can be taken against Yameen for making unsubstantiated lies about Qasim and his son. We strongly condemn this,” he said.
Yameen’s interview also included allegations against other political figures. During the final year of his presidency, he said his brother, former president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, and Maumoon’s son Ahmed Faris were jailed over similar bribery allegations.
Maumoon’s office has denied the claims and said it is considering legal action against Yameen for such allegations.
