The Maldives has achieved a major milestone by being included in the United Nations Tax Committee for the first time.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres recently appointed 25 international tax experts to the UN Committee of Experts on International Cooperation in Tax Matters for the upcoming term. Among them is Mohamed Ali Waheed, Assistant Commissioner General of the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA), who will represent the Maldives.
This expert committee plays a crucial role in helping countries develop and implement tax policies that support social, environmental, and economic goals. It also offers guidance on key global tax challenges, including double taxation, the digital economy, and crypto assets.
Maldivian Foreign Minister described the appointment as a proud and historic moment, saying it reflects the Maldives’ growing ability to participate and lead in the international arena.
The newly appointed committee members will meet for the first time in October at the UN Headquarters in Geneva.
