Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) has announced that it will begin purchasing fish from Fuvahmulah later this month, marking a significant step in improving fisheries infrastructure in the region.
In a press release issued today, MIFCO confirmed that the arrangements to buy fish from the island will be made permanent. The company also stated that the Fuvahmulah fish processing center will be operational within the year, allowing processed fish to be made available for purchase locally.
The Fuvahmulah City Council revealed yesterday that it had met with MIFCO officials to discuss the initiative. As part of the agreement, a MIFCO fishing vessel will be permanently stationed at the island to support ongoing fish collection. The council also confirmed that a storage facility will be opened this year to support the new operations.

Additionally, MIFCO is preparing to streamline its export process by starting direct fish exports from Addu City, eliminating the need to transport catches to Huvadhu Atoll. The company said this new export route is expected to be operational within the next month.
These developments are part of broader efforts to enhance fisheries infrastructure and support local fishermen across the southern atolls.
