The second session of parliament has been extended by one week

The current session is now set to continue until 21 August.

Parliament regulations state that the current parliament term was due to end this month.

The motion to extend passed with 59 votes in favor and 10 against.

Parliament Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdullah said the extension was necessary to complete important matters that concern the people, and not to rush bills through.

“Parliament is where work for the public is done. Members should go on leave only after completing their duties to the people,” he said.
