The state has filed a petition in the Civil Court seeking enforcement of an unpaid MVR 1 million portion of a MVR 2 million fine imposed on former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb.

Adeeb was sentenced by the Criminal Court to 20 years in prison and fined MVR 2 million after being convicted of seven counts of corruption in Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) scandal.

He has paid half the fine but has yet to settle the remaining amount.

The prosecution first filed a case in January to recover the outstanding sum, and the court ordered full payment within one month.

As the fine remains unpaid, authorities have now sought to enforce the judgment. However, an official from the Attorney General’s Office said enforcement cannot be carried out due to Adeeb’s lack of funds in his bank account and no property in his name.

Despite the original 20-year sentence, a deal during the administration of former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih reduced Adeeb’s remaining prison term to just four days, leading to his release.

Adeeb has since left the country.
