Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) is preparing to export fish straight from Addu instead of sending catch in Addu to Huvadhoo atoll.
In a statement issued last night, MIFCO said that export of fish from Addu will be commenced in the coming month.
They also announced that producing value added fisheries products in Addu will also be launched within the year.
MIFCO plans to launch operations at the fish sales centre in GDh. Thinadhoo—currently under development—within the next year.
The company also plans to commence buying yellowfin tuna caught in the northern and southern regions within the year.
Plans have also been set in motion to improve operations of the Kooddoo fish processing factory at this time when fisheries are at a low. This includes:
- repairing roads in the harbour area
- upgrading the Kooddoo local production factory
- commencing swift renovations and maintenance at Felivaru cannery this month
MIFCO's statement reads that the company believes these efforts are imperative at this time.
The company also announced plans to takeover the private fish processing factory, ENSIS, last night. MIFCO said that relevant studies have been conducted, and discussions are being held with ENSIS management.
No further details regarding this arrangement have been revealed as of yet.
