Government's financial statistics show that over MVR 1 billion has been deposited in the Sovereign Development Fund (SDF) in the first seven months of this year.
Weekly statistics shared by the Finance Ministry indicate that as of the end of July, MVR 1.18 billion has deposited in the SDF. The same period last year saw deposits of MVR 783.8 million.
SDF was created in 2017, during the administration of former President Abdulla Yameen, to assist in debt repayment.
Records show that MVR 3.5 billion has been used for debt repayment in the first seven months of the year.
The State Budget has stayed in surplus, even after significant repayments, due to rising revenues and disciplined spending.
As of the last week of July, the state budget maintained a surplus of MVR 314.3 million, in sharp contrast to previous years. For comparison, the government reported a budget deficit of MVR 6.4 billion during the same period in 2024, and a deficit of MVR 4.2 billion in 2023.
