Former Supreme Court Judge Abdul Ghani Mohamed has been appointed as Chief Justice today.
Ghani took oath of office at a ceremony held at the President's Office this morning, where President Dr Mohamed Muizzu presented his letter of appointment.
Ghani is the fifth Chief Justice appointed since the ratification of the new constitution.
Ghani served as a Civil Court Judge from 2000 to 2004. From 2004 to 2018, he served as a High Court Judge. He was then appointed to the Supreme Court bench, but was later dismissed in December 2019.
Ghani was appointed as a member of the Tax Appeal Tribunal in 2024.
Besides Ghani, former Criminal Court Chief Judge and Family Court Judge Abdulla Mohamed and former High Court Chief Judge Shujau Usman applied for the post of Chief Justice.
