Ministry of Social and Family Development has reported that 148 children are currently under state care.
According to figures released today, 80 boys and 68 girls are currently under state care.
In June, two girls were taken into custody, while one girl was returned to her family. The ministry also noted that one child who turned 18 was reintegrated into the community after gaining employment, and another was offered an internship.
Previously, minors were mainly housed in shelters like Kudakudhinge Hiya and Fiyavathi. However, since 2022, the government has begun placing them in Amaan Veshi (alternative care homes) established across different islands.
The ministry also revealed that sexual abuse was the most reported form of violence against children in June, with 21 cases involving girls and six involving boys. Physical abuse was the second most common, affecting 12 girls and six boys. Child neglect was the third most reported issue.
