The Ministry of Health announced that seven children will be sent abroad for bone marrow transplants this month under a government-funded initiative.
In February last year, the Ministry of Islamic Affairs and the Ministry of Health signed an agreement to fund bone marrow transplants for 10 children annually through the Zakat Fund.
So far this year, three children were sent for treatment in April. Of the remaining seven, three are scheduled to depart today, one tomorrow, and the other three on the 8th, 9th, and 12th of this month.
Health Minister Abdulla Nazim met with the families of the children earlier today.
The government provides financial assistance of up to MVR 1 million per child for the procedure. Currently, 22 children are on the waiting list for bone marrow transplants.
