A man arrested for making a death threat against President Dr Mohamed Muizzu on Facebook has been remanded in custody for 10 days.

The suspect, identified as Maseeh Moosa of Malas, Th. Thimarafushi, was taken into custody by police, who also seized his mobile phone as part of the investigation. The court extended his remand today.

The arrest followed a Facebook post in which Maseeh reacted to a news posted regarding the President’s comments on imposing stricter penalties for drug offences.

In a post on X, President Muizzu had expressed support for enforcing harsher punishments for drug smugglers and traffickers—including the death penalty, similar to policies in certain other countries.

In response, Maseeh allegedly wrote that the President “should be killed first,” prompting swift action from law enforcement.

Police say the investigation is ongoing.
