Police are investigating a death threat made against President Dr Mohamed Muizzu on social media, following his recent comments to implement punishment for drug traffickers.
A police media official said that the threat is under investigation but did not disclose further details.
The incident arose after an article about the government’s plans to implement the death penalty for drug-related offences was shared by the media online.
In response, a user by the name Maseeh Moosa reposted the article on Facebook, stating that “the President should be killed first.”
The post sparked widespread concern, with many calling for an investigation into the threat.
The case adds to growing tensions as the government pushes forward with controversial judicial reforms, including potential enforcement of capital punishment—a move that has drawn both support and criticism from the public and human rights advocates.
