A decorative arch set up on the road leading to Velana International Airport collapsed this afternoon due to strong winds and heavy rain in Male' area.

Police said they received the report at around 1:30 pm. The arch, which had been installed for Independence Day celebrations on 26 July, fell as a result of severe weather conditions.

Police said that no injuries or damage to vehicles were reported. However, the incident temporarily disrupted traffic as the road was closed for safety reasons.

According to police, the debris has since been cleared by officers and staff from Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), and the road has been reopened.

Maldives Meteorological Service has forecast continued rain and rough seas over the next two days, with winds reaching up to 50mph as the country remains under the influence of the Hulhangu monsoon.
