The new terminal at Velana International Airport will air the adhan (call to prayer) at the five prayer times daily.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu announced this in a post on X today, stating that it has commenced with Asr prayers today.
The first flight to receive service at the new terminal was national airline Maldivian's wide body aircraft A330 which flew from Cochin to Male' this afternoon.
The new terminal was inaugurated in a festive ceremony held last night featuring a drone show and fireworks as Maldives' marked its 60th Independence Day.
Development of the new terminal commenced in 2016, with the project costing USD 457 million (MVR 7 billion).
The terminal is initially providing service to Maldivian airline flights, with other airlines to be gradually incorporated into service. The airport aims to provide service to all airlines at the new terminal by September.
