Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with the Speaker of the Maldives Parliament, Abdul Raheem Abdulla, today as part of his two-day official visit to the country.
Modi met with a number of Maldivian political leaders during the visit.
Following his meeting with Speaker Abdul Raheem, Modi shared on social media that the two had discussed the deep friendship between the Maldives and India, particularly the relationship between the two countries’ legislatures.
Modi described the formation of the Maldives–India Parliamentary Friendship Group in the 20th Parliament as a positive step forward, adding that India would continue to support capacity-building efforts in Maldives.
In response to the post on X, Abdul Raheem thanked Modi for the warm meeting and said he looked forward to taking the partnership between the two parliaments “to new levels” in the coming years.
Abdul Raheem, a senior figure in the opposition coalition PPM/PNC, was a prominent leader of the “India Out” campaign and previously criticized Modi and Indian influence during political rallies.
