The two Indian companies which were contracted to construct 4,000 flats under the Gedhoruveriyaa housing programme have completed the project and the units have been officially handed over to the government today.

The project was contracted by Fahi Dhiriulhun Corporation (FDC) to India’s National Buildings Construction Corporation (NBCC) and Kalpataru Projects International Limited (KPIL), with each company delivering 2,000 flats. The flats are located in Hulhumale' Phase two.

During official talks at the President’s Office, India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi handed over the symbolic keys to President Dr Mohamed Muizzu.

FDC began signing agreements with flat recipients on Monday.

The housing scheme, launched by the administration of former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, was funded through a USD 227 million (MVR 4.2 billion) loan from India’s Exim Bank.

The current government has also announced plans to begin construction of an additional 4,000 flats, using funds from a previously provided line of credit facility from Exim Bank of India.
