Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a ceremonial welcome in Male' on his two day official visit to Maldives at the invitation of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu.
Modi was received at Velana International Airport by President Muizzu and later accorded an official welcome at Republic Square, where he was greeted by the President, Vice-President Hussain Mohamed Latheef, cabinet ministers, and senior government officials.

A cultural performance by school students was held at the square, followed by a 21-gun salute from the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF). MNDF band played the national anthems of both countries.
Republic Square was extensively decorated for the occasion, featuring photographs of Modi, national flags, and ceremonial arches. Following the event, Modi walked to the President’s Office with a MNDF guard of honour.

This is Modi’s first visit to Maldives since beginning his third term in office, and the first by a foreign head of government since President Muizzu took office in November 2023.
Official talks between the two leaders and the signing of several bilateral agreements are scheduled at the President’s Office.
Modi is also set to inaugurate the new Defence Ministry building, constructed with Indian grant assistance, and will attend the 60th Independence Day celebrations as guest of honour at Republic Square tomorrow evening.
