President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said the government is not receiving any cooperation from Mohamed Abbas, the Maldives Democratic Alliance (MDA) MP for Velidhoo, in efforts to develop Noonu atoll Holhudhoo.
However, President Muizzu said this would not hinder the government's work and vowed to continue serving the people regardless of political obstacles.
Speaking during his ongoing tour of Noonu atoll, President Muizzu stressed that elected representatives should set aside political differences when it comes to public service.
“If you are elected by the people, you should not place politics above their needs. We must all work responsibly and professionally,” he said.
The President noted that MPs from the main opposition party, the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), had made it easier for the government to carry out development projects.
“They don’t interfere. They haven’t raised any concerns with me regarding their constituencies. So, in that way, it’s easier to work,” he said.
In contrast, Muizzu expressed disappointment with Holhudhoo MP Abbas, saying the MP had created obstacles instead of facilitating progress.
“It’s unfortunate that while MDP MPs don’t get in the way, the MP for this constituency has made things more difficult,” he said.
Despite the lack of support from Abbas, President Muizzu said he remains focused on his current tour of 13 islands in Noonu atoll, which began on Monday.
“We will move forward directly with the people in serving them. That is not a problem for us,” he said.
He also praised the councils of other islands in the atoll, particularly the Fodhdhoo Council, for their cooperation. He extended special thanks to the Council President and announced plans to visit Fodhdhoo next to mark the completion of several development projects.
