A nationwide project to build handball courts on islands will begin next year, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu announced today.
The president made the announcement during his ongoing tour of Noonu atoll, after residents of Landhoo requested the development of a court on their island.
“Handball is widely played by women in many islands. It is a sport we want to promote, and many islands are in need of proper courts,” President Muizzu said.

He added that the 2026 national budget would include allocations for the construction of handball courts in multiple locations across the country.
“We will establish a dedicated programme in next year’s budget to build handball courts in various islands. Landhoo will be included as part of that project,” he said.
Handball continues to grow in popularity among both women and men in Maldives, with many islands currently using football fields for the sport.
Currently, the only dedicated handball court is in Male'. Plans are underway to convert the existing court at Male' Handball Stadium into a indoor court.
