Parliament passes to extend Niumath's term

Niumath was appointed as ombudsperson in July 2020 with her term set to expire this month, after which President Muizzu sought to extend her term by an additional five years.

Parliament today has passed to extend Children's Ombudsperson Niumath Shafeeq's term by five years.

She was appointed to the role as ombudsperson in July 2020 with her term set to expire this month, following which President Dr Mohamed Muizzu sought an extension of her term by an additional five years.

Today's parliament sitting saw a decision to extend her term with a 50 member vote.

Parliament has the authority to extend a current ombudspersons term by an additional five years under the Children's Rights Protection Act.

Niumath, in collaboration with UNICEF has made many strides in building various Maldivian pre-schools, along with many years of educating children as well. She has attained a degree and masters in Early Childhood Education from Australia.
