President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu announced today that discussions are underway to upgrade Maafaru International Airport with a hotel for layover-tourists and a new terminal.

The announcement was made during his current Noonu Atoll visit at Maafaru while addressing the public.

The President acknowledged that Noonu Atoll has a wide range of tourism being conducted and so Maafaru Airport would need more services to accommodate growing needs.

"We are formulating various plans for further developments to the airport. We are currently in talks with the people responsible for the construction of the airport, with them expressing an interest. They are also conducting research concerning planning," stated the President.

"We're taking into account the previously discussed features, with other plans being thought up as well."

The President has given his guarantee that the work to upgrade Maafaru Airport will begin quite soon.

Maafaru Airport was opened as an international quality airport on 8th July 2025.

In order to check the capability of the newly constructed airport, which is known to be a hub for private jets, a Boeing 777 Emirates aircraft landed in May.

In order to upgrade Maafaru Airport, it stopped its services in allowing international flights to land last year in May, with services resuming in October of the same year. Maafaru Airport, operated by Island Aviation, was opened initially on December 2019.
