The Maldives Marine Research Institute (MMRI), in collaboration with Mote Marine Laboratory, has completed a two-week survey to assess the population of fish and sharks in Malé Atoll.
According to the Ministry of Fisheries, the survey was conducted from July 3 to 16 as part of the Global Fingerprint Project, an international marine biodiversity initiative.
Researchers used Baited Remote Underwater Video Systems (BRUVS)—a specialized tool in marine biology—to monitor and record fish and shark populations without disturbing their natural behavior.
The data collected will support long-term marine conservation and resource management efforts in the Maldives.
