Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has decided to allow Chief Justice Ahmed Muthasim Adnan to retire with honours next Monday.
Muthasim submitted his notice of retirement last May. JSC has now approved his request, allowing him to step down from the post with honors and associated benefits.
It is believed that the Chief Justice will carry out his official duties on Sunday, with his retirement taking effect the following day.
Muthasim will become the first Chief Justice to retire with honour under the current Constitution. All previous Chief Justices were removed from office.
He was appointed Chief Justice in December 2019, having previously served as a Supreme Court judge from 2009 to 2014.
His decision to retire follows the suspension of former Supreme Court judges Dr Azmiralda Zahir, Justice Mahaz Ali Zahir and Justice Husnu Suood. While Suood later resigned, Azmiralda and Mahaz were found guilty of misconduct and dismissed.
