The 17-year-old boy, Yoosuf Alson Mohamed, died in a fatal road accident in Malé City on Sunday night while riding a rented motorcycle that was not issued in his name.
Alson, the only son of local singer Mariyam Ashfa and Mohamed Abdul Ghani (Theyravaa), was pronounced dead following a collision near the Maafannu bus terminal. According to police reports, the motorcycle struck a pedestrian before crashing into an oncoming pickup truck.
A source close to the family told Mihaaru News that Alson’s parents were unaware he had been riding a motorcycle.
“His father or family members usually took him wherever he needed to go,” the source said.
Following the incident, the family began contacting rental businesses and learned that the motorcycle had been issued to a 22-year-old man on the evening of the accident. The vehicle was rented by a relative of a 16-year-old boy who was riding pillion with Alson at the time. It remains unclear who ultimately handed the bike over to Alson.
The 16-year-old is currently receiving treatment in the ward at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH), while the 40-year-old pedestrian remains in serious condition on a ventilator, according to hospital officials.
