The stories of Maldivian national heroes Mohamed Thakurufaanu Al Auzam (Boduthakurufaanu) and Alirasgefaanu are set to be published in book form for students, written by renowned author and journalist Mohamed Jameel.
The book on Boduthakurufaanu is based on earlier works by historian Hussain Salahuddin and oral accounts shared by Buraara Mohamed. Meanwhile, the story of Alirasgefaanu marks the first book written in Dhivehi about the historical figure.
Jameel said his aim is to make the stories of national heroes accessible and engaging for students and teachers, addressing the lack of Dhivehi literature for secondary school students.
"My own son doesn’t have a Dhivehi book about Boduthakurufaanu to read with interest. As a father, I couldn’t find a suitable one to buy," he said.
"Bookshop owners and parents often tell me that there are no Dhivehi books available for students in Grades 9 and 10."
Jameel said he made significant efforts to preserve the essence and authenticity of the original texts, especially the classic style of Salahuddin, while consulting historians, writers, scholars, and military experts.
“I’ve tried to enrich the language with Dhivehi vocabulary and present the stories in a style that will spark students’ interest,” he said.

The book on Boduthakurufaanu features a modern illustration of the iconic vessel "Kalhu Oh Fummi", used by the hero in his journey to liberate the Maldives from Portuguese rule. It also includes colour photographs, charts, and artefacts linked to Boduthakurufaanu’s legacy.
Jameel said the books aim to connect young readers with key figures in Maldivian history, including King Kalhu Mohamed, Dhonbulhaafaashanaa, Burekiranin (the king’s aunt), her daughter Kanbaa Aisa, and Sihthimaavaa Ranikilegefaanu, the child of Alirasgefaanu and Kanbaa Aisa. Their stories are interconnected into the larger narrative of Boduthakurufaanu and the struggle for the throne.
The inspiration for writing the books, Jameel said, came from President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s recent call to revive nationalism. He was personally encouraged by the Chancellor of the Maldives National University, Dr Mahmood Shauqee, to take up the work.
The books are being published by businessman Mohamed Janah, who is active in the construction and tourism sectors. They are scheduled to be released on National Day this year.
Jameel, who has over 35 years of experience in journalism, is also the author of "Orchid" a book on the 1953 coup against President Mohamed Amin Didi, "Insaafu", a biography of former President Dr Mohamed Waheed, and a biography of Jumhooree Party leader Qasim Ibrahim.
