President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has officially dissolved the Presidential Commission established to investigate the fall of Hawwa Yumn Rasheed, who was found on the roof of H. Mitaz in Malé on April 18.

The commission was disbanded on Sunday through a presidential decree after completing its assigned tasks. The final report of the commission was released on June 17. On the same day, President Muizzu instructed the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of Health to implement the report’s recommendations and take appropriate action.

The report highlighted several procedural failures during the initial investigation by law enforcement:

● The Police Command Center delayed informing the assigned investigating officer, resulting in a one-hour lag. During that time, a crime scene officer had already removed evidence critical to the investigation.

● The investigating officer did not arrive at the scene even after the crime scene was processed, leading to incomplete collection of information and evidence.

● The crime scene officer failed to adequately examine all relevant areas and departed the scene shortly after arriving, without fulfilling several core duties.

● No attempt was made to gather evidence from the rooftop of H. Mitaz, a location deemed central to the case.

As a result of the commission’s findings, Daud Ahmed, then Under Secretary for Strategic Communications at the President’s Office, was dismissed from his post on June 19 after it was determined he had made false statements regarding the incident.

Raud Ahmed Zilal, who was reportedly the last person seen with Yumn on the night of her fall, was arrested but later released. He now faces charges of failure to provide assistance to a person in need without justifiable reason.

The incident sparked widespread concern, particularly among the youth, leading to a wave of protests in Malé City over the perceived mishandling of the investigation. Former Commissioner of Police Ali Shujau resigned in the wake of the public outcry.
