A special constabulary officer stationed in GDh. Thinadhoo was arrested for allegedly selling tobacco products, including vapes and cigarettes, without authorization has been released.

According to Maldives Police Service, the officer was taken into custody following a tip-off about the illegal sale of tobacco. A subsequent court-ordered search of his residence and motorcycle uncovered a large quantity of tobacco products, including nano sticks, vape devices, cartridges, and 191.92 grams of suspected drug-related items.

The suspect was presented before the court for a remand hearing; however, police said the court later declared the arrest warrant invalid, and the officer was released. Authorities added that efforts are underway to appeal the remand decision in coordination with the Prosecutor General’s Office.

The officer, who had reportedly joined the police force only last month, has been suspended pending investigation.

In Maldives, the import of vapes has been banned since November under the Tobacco Control Act. The use of such devices has also been prohibited since December 15. Individuals found in possession or engaged in the sale of these products face legal penalties, including fines.

Additionally, the sale of tobacco products is now permitted only with a valid license under recent amendments to the Act.
