AbduRahman, who died in AA. Maalhos at dawn today after having been seriously assaulted while asleep, had a serious head injury, a resident of Maalhos has said.
They said that it is believed the head injury was inflicted with a blunt object like a metal rod or wooden plank.
AbduRahman, 65, of Orchidmaage, AA. Maalhos was found with severe injuries and taken to the island's health centre late last night. He passed away in the early hours of this morning while receiving treatment for his injuries.
AbduRahman's wife had found him severely injured and notified the health centre. A resident from the island said that AbduRahman's wife works as a council assistant in the island council. They said that AbduRahman and his wife lived alone, with their two children living in capital Male'.
Police have said that they received reports of the incident at approximately 1:50am last night.
"His eyes were also seriously swollen. It appears as if he was hit over the eyes with a lot of force," the Maalhos resident said.
Details of the incident are not known as of yet.
"Some in the island are saying there are marks of an injury on his throat inflicted with a sharp object. There were four injuries on his head," the resident said.
AbduRahman was a fisherman, usually fishing for yellowfin tuna.
It has been reported that Police have commenced an investigation into the case, and are now monitoring those coming and going from the island.
The Maalhos resident said that an incident such as this has never before occurred on the island, which has a population of about 400. They said that this is extremely shocking.
"Something this evil has never happened on this island before. We are all in shock," they said, adding that there is no one on the island that they suspect of having committed the assault.
