The authorities are investigating the death of an American tourist who was snorkeling at an Alifu Dhaalu resort.

Police stated today that the incident was reported at 12:30 pm on Tuesday (8th July 2025).

The deceased was identified as a 47-year-old American man, but the authorities did not say which resort the incident occurred at nor did they give any further details besides stating they are conducting further investigations.

112 tourists have died in various marine accidents in the past five years, according to figures released by the authorities in the People's Majlis last week.

Majlis members have expressed concerned over the lack of effort from the Tourism Ministry in forming a plan to prevent such incidents, even though such cases have seen an increase in the last five years.

According to authorities, more than 20 tourists died in such incidents last year alone.

In the last five years, 68 tourists have died by drowning. 42 tourists have died while on diving and snorkeling expeditions. And one tourist died while 9 were injured due to a boat collision while snorkeling and diving.
