Authorities conduct search for man lost while sailing in dinghy

A search is ongoing for a man who has gone missing at sea.

Zakariyya Mohamed, 75, was last seen sailing on a dinghy from GDh. Gahdhoo to Gan, Police said.

He left for Gan at 9:30am yesterday morning, and had started his return journey at 11:15am, according to Police.

However, with no news from Zakariyya after this, a report was filed with Police yesterday afternoon.

Police, in collaboration with MNDF, commenced a search for him. Uninhabited islands near Gan were also searched.

When last seen, Zakariyya was wearing a blue short-sleeved shirt and black shorts, Police said.

Also last night, Police searched for a 35 year old Maldivian man who had gone out to sea in a canoe from a resort in R. Atoll. He was found safe.

Authorities have advised vigilance at sea as rough conditions are expected over the coming days with inclement weather.
