Part of the ceiling in a classroom of HA. Vashafaru school has collapsed, causing injuries to two ninth graders.

An official from the Ministry of Education said that the incident occurred this morning.

The two students were taken to the Vashafaru Health Centre straight after the incident. With one child complaining of pain in the shoulder, they were transferred to HA. Dhihdhoo Hospital for further treatment, but has since been discharged.

"They were taken to get an X-Ray taken, because there was pain. There were no complications found in the X-Ray, so they have also been discharged and allowed to return home," the official said.

The ministry said that the ceiling had collapsed in the most recently developed building in the school, which was made operational five years ago. They said that concerns about issues in the ceiling had been lodged with the ministry earlier as well.

"Material had already been taken for repairs when this incident occurred today," the official said.

A total of 85 students are enrolled at the HA. Vashafaru School which teaches up to Grade 10.
