South Hulhumale' member Dr. Ahmed Shamheed issued an emergency motion to the People's Majlis concerning the slowing down of service at Hulhumale' Hospital. The motion was promptly thrown out.
With 47 members in attendance today at the Majlis, 37 members voted not to look into the matter, with the other 10 voting in favour.
As he was presenting the emergency motion, Shamheed stated that ensuring that Hulhumale', a location that has a sizeable population, receives all essential services without interruption is a responsibility of the government.
Shamheed went on to say that due to the fact that private health institutions don't offer full Aasandha coverage, people have no choice but to go to government hospitals for their medical needs. Hulhumale' Hospital has 15,000 patients who go in for doctors consultations monthly and public concern about the hospital's services has reached an all time high, he said.
Shaheed raised the issues that the government is not allocating the required budget amount, nor providing the required resources for them to run at their maximum potential. There is also the issue of a lack of doctors, specialists and health sector professionals as well, he said.
Issues raised in the emergency motion
- Not enough employees to properly run the 24 hour hospital around the clock.
- A lack of a sufficient number of medical officers leading to longer working hours and a lack of focus in attending to patients.
- Doctors not wanting to work due to overtime pay being abolished.
- A lack of an intervention cardiologist leading to a heart attack patient having to be transported to IGMH.
- A lack of a neurologist.
- The reason for issues cropping up such as yesterdays (8th July 2025) one-hour service stoppage due to a server issue is because of a lack of upgrades and development of facilities as hospital operations increase.
- Last weeks power outage resulting in the hospitals OPD services being done at another location and that it took six hours for services to be back up.
The issue of public concern rising due to health services at the hospital degrading was thrown out of Majlis.
27th June saw Hulhumale' Hospital experience a power outage for multiple hours, resulting in a halt in services. OPD services were handed over to Phase 2's General Practice Clinic for the day.
The hospital was converted into a tertiary hospital and opened in November 2024 after general concerns from the public were heard.
