Parliament has today rejected an emergency motion submitted regarding the new agreements the government intends to make with Gulhi Falhu land recipients under the Binveriya scheme after voiding the previous agreements entered into during the administration of former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
The emergency motion was submitted by opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) MP Mohamed Ibrahim (North Galolhu).
Submitting the motion, Ibrahim said that the previous government had issued land from Gulhi Falhu, announced recipients, gazetted this, and signed agreements. He raised concerns about the Housing Ministry now working on signing new agreements, claiming legal issues with the previous agreement.
Ibrahim stated that land recipients are being coerced into signing the new agreements which the government has formed after voiding the previous agreements and changing the policies on issuing land.
He said that this is against Contract Laws for the government to cancel an agreement they had entered into with private individuals, determine what will be agreed upon between the two parties and force recipients to sign.
While only 12 MPs voted in favour of accepting the motion, 34 voted against.
Yesterday, the Gulhifalhu Citizens' Association has also appealed to land recipients to not sign the new agreements.
