Four-wheeled land vehicles will now require permits approved by the government to be registered from 13th July 2025 onwards, as confirmed by the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation.

A guideline to register four-wheel vehicles existed prior to this announcement. To obtain the permit, a registration form containing the vehicle information or an original issued by the manufacturer of the vehicle, if it is an unregistered vehicle, must be submitted.

However, due to public concern, the guideline was dissolved by the Ministry of Transport on 16th March 2023.

However, the Ministry of Transport amended the rules in April to require all but two-wheelers to submit a garage letter before importing the vehicle.

The ministry said in an announcement today, excluding two-wheeled vehicles, import and registration efforts for all land-bound vehicles must abide by the sixth amendment brought to the registration rules from 13th July onwards, and any vehicle cannot be registered or imported without the approval of the ministry.

In order to request a permit for the import of any vehicle, it can be done so via eportal.mta.gov.mv. The necessary registration form can be acquired from the ministry's website and reception.

The ministry has stated that from 13th July 2025 onwards, all four-wheel vehicles will need to have a permit submitted for registration.
