The Ministry of Education has announced that over 500 students have applied for placements at the new Shaheed Ali School, which is currently under construction in Hulhumalé Phase 2.
The school opened for applications last month for students residing in the area and across Malé and Hulhumalé Phase 1.
Speaking to Mihaaru News, Education Minister Dr. Ismail Shafeeu stated that more than 800 students from Phase 2 are currently enrolled in schools elsewhere, and 525 of them have now submitted transfer applications to join the new school.
Dr. Ismail Shafeeu confirmed that the school’s construction will be completed by November this year, with classes expected to commence in January 2026.
Designed to serve Grades 1 to 10, the school has capacity for 1,500 students in a single session. However, the ministry plans to introduce a two-session system if demand exceeds capacity, to allow more students from the neighbourhood to attend school close to home.
The facility will include 54 classrooms, each designed to accommodate 32 students, along with an auditorium, a library, and three elevators with a 20-person capacity each.
Currently, Salahuddin School is the only institution in Hulhumalé Phase 2 offering all grade levels. The Ministry of Education has previously highlighted that the area needs at least seven additional schools to meet growing demand
