Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) has said that the boat owner who got injured in yesterday's fire is now being treated in the Intensive Care Unit.

The boat owner and an expatriate crew member sustained burn injuries in a fire that broke out on two fuel vessels docked at the Th. Vilufushi harbour yesterday morning.

The boat owner has been identified as Mahmood Mohamed.

Vilufushi Council President Hassan Jabeen said that the crew member's injuries are not serious, but Mahmood sustained severe burns. While initially treated at the Vilufushi Health Centre, he was later transferred to Male' for further treatment yesterday.

An IGMH official said that he is now being treated in the ICU. They did not disclose any further details.

A Vilufushi Council member said yesterday that it is believed the fire ignited in one vessel when the pump was switched on while the petrol tank was full, and that the fire then spread to the adjacent fuel vessel as well.

It has been reported that a fire incident occurred a couple of years ago on another of Mahmood's fuel vessels as well.
