President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu stated that Singapore is a country the Maldives looks to as an example, and emphasized the importance of collaboration between the two nations on matters of mutual benefit.

Speaking at a state banquet hosted by Singapore’s President Tharman Shanmugaratnam in honor of President Muizzu and the First Lady, Muizzu praised Singapore’s transformation into a major business hub known for its innovation and development.

“The Maldives looks to Singapore as an example for its advancements, and it is important that we move forward together in ways that benefit the future of both countries,” he said, highlighting the need to strengthen bilateral ties for the benefit of future generations.

Noting that both the Maldives and Singapore are small countries with valuable resources, President Muizzu expressed interest in working with Singaporean businesses in mutually beneficial areas.

He also reflected on the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries, noting the partnership spans across business and other sectors. He credited the strength of the relationship to mutual respect and shared goals.

President Muizzu extended gratitude to Singapore for its past support during critical times, including the 2014 water crisis in Malé, recovery from tsunami damage, and assistance in the construction of Ghazi School.

President Tharman, in his speech, acknowledged the shared challenges both countries face due to climate change and stressed the importance of working together.

A special commemorative stamp marking 50 years of diplomatic relations was jointly unveiled by the two presidents at the ceremony. Additionally, the two countries signed three Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) to enhance cooperation in key areas.
