The motion submitted seeking to discuss an exclusion of overtime pay that should come with working extra hours in the health and education sector has been accepted in parliament today.
Kanditheemu MP Ameen Faisal introduced the motion, with 47 parliament members voting in favour. The motion has therefore been referred to the Heritage Committee and Social Committee.
MP Ameen Faisal stated in the motion that a fair amount of health and education workers are working overtime without being properly compensated with overtime pay.
An effort to bring about a fair and just environment in relation to receiving overtime pay with proper policy implementation was highlighted in the motion.
The motion states that there is a set ceiling of overtime pay that can be provided to workers in the health and education sector.
As per the Pay Framework and its established guidelines, the maximum amount of overtime pay an employee can accumulate is 10% of their monthly salary. Employers are not allowed to let their workers work beyond this cap.
However, the motion states that health and education sector workers do work beyond the set guidelines. Due to the amount of healthcare workers being on the lower end, workers are made to make up for the lack of employees with more hours put in. Teachers in the education sector have to put in extra hours at the school as well, due to the lack of sufficient employee volume.
The motion states that if employees are to work beyond the required overtime ceiling, it is important that an exception to the current rule has to be put into place, with guidelines seeing the appropriate changes being made posthaste.
