Hulhumale' Hospital has opened applications for medical internships.

Application submission opened up yesterday on June 29, with a deadline set for July 8 by 12:00 pm, according to the hospital.

Currently, Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) is the only government hospital where internships are possible. The Health Ministry has stated that Addu Equatorial Hospital will soon offer a one-year internship program for fresh medical graduates, due to the increase in graduates and to counteract the ever-increasing number of graduates who want to further advance in their field.

Internship opportunities are also present at ADK, the country's first private hospital. However, interns that are looking to become doctors have to pay a fee to conduct their internship there.

15 internship slots are currently available at Hulhumale' Hospital.

If the number of applicants exceeds 15, priority will be given to those who completed their MBBS earlier, as well as to individuals who submitted their CVs to apply for internship positions. The longer an applicant has waited since submitting their application, the higher the priority they will receive.

When applying for the internship, a copy of the MBBS certificate that was awarded to graduates has to be attested. This process can be conducted at MQA, where accreditation takes place.

Copies of both a Police Clearance Certificate and Certificate of Provisional Medical Registration via the Maldives Medical and Dental Council has to be submitted as well. Under the new framework setup for doctors remuneration, interns are to receive an allowance of MVR10,000.

Interns at government hospitals will receive this allowance.

As per the Maldives Medical and Dental Council's guidelines, a minimum of five to six years of medical education and an year of internship experience is required to attain a license to practice medicine.
