An orchid has been named in honor of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu and First Lady Sajidha Mohamed during their official state visit to Singapore.
National Orchid Garden of Singapore bestowed the honor during the presidential couple's visit to the garden this morning. They were welcomed by Dr Tan Puay Yok, Executive Director of the Singapore Botanic Gardens, who presented them with the official certificate of naming.
The orchid-naming ceremony is a long-standing Singaporean tradition, extended to presidents and first ladies of visiting countries as a gesture of diplomatic goodwill.
President Muizzu and First Lady Sajidha also signed the garden’s guest book during the visit. The orchid named in their honor will now join a prestigious collection of blooms named after other global leaders.
This is not the first time orchids have been named after Maldivian dignitaries, continuing a tradition that underscores the 50-year diplomatic relationship between the Maldives and Singapore, which is being celebrated during this visit.
As part of his trip, President Muizzu is also scheduled to meet with Singapore’s President and Prime Minister, and to sign several MoUs aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation in various sectors.
