Maldives has established an embassy in Qatar, with its mandate under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu announced the creation of the diplomatic mission under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, exercising powers granted under Article 116(h) of the Constitution.
The embassy is aimed at strengthening bilateral relations and enhancing cooperation in areas including education, politics, the economy, and defense.
The statement also confirmed the embassy’s official English name and outlined its mandate.
Maldives and Qatar first established diplomatic relations on 26 May 1984. However, ties were severed in 2017 during former President Abdulla Yameen’s administration, following tensions in the Gulf region.
The two countries re-established relations on 15 March 2021 under former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
Qatar currently has a non-resident ambassador to Maldives, Jassim bin Jaber JB Al-Sorour, who is based in Sri Lanka. He presented his credentials to President Muizzu in September last year.
