Minister of Health Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim has announced that development of the Mental Health Hospital in L. Gan will commence within the year.

Mental health issues are highly prevalent in the Maldives, and the government is prioritizing facilitating access to mental health services in Male' and the atolls, the Minister told Mihaaru News last week.

In the interview, Nazim said that all arrangements are now in place to develop the Mental Health Hospital in L. Gan through India's Line of Credit.

"Work will commence without much delay," he said, "the hope is to begin within the year."

The former administration, under President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, initially planned to construct a Cancer Hospital in L. Gan under Indian assistance. However, the project remained stalled even as he left office. The incumbent government decided to transfer the Cancer Hospital project to the Male' area and to develop a Mental Health Hospital in L. Gan instead.

Health Minister Nazim said that efforts are ongoing to develop the Cancer Hospital as well, but the discussions on the project remain yet to be completed.
