Eighteen percent of individuals who completed court-ordered drug treatment have relapsed, according to new figures from the Drug Court.

The data, released to mark the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, shows that more than 11,700 drug-related cases have been filed with the court since its establishment under the Narcotics Act 2011.

The court said that 94 percent of cases involve men, while women account for 3 percent and children 2 percent.

Of the 5,148 individuals who completed treatment and received final verdicts, 946 have since reappeared in court indicating a relapse rate of around 18 percent. The remaining 4,202, or 82 percent, have not been charged again since completing their treatment, the court said.

In addition, the court ordered 2,389 individuals to be discharged from treatment and imprisoned. Of these, 498 have reoffended and returned to court after serving their sentences, all facing drug use charges again.

As of May this year, 1,376 cases remain pending at the Drug Court. Of these, 1,192 are currently in the treatment phase, while 184 are at the pre-rehabilitation order stage.
