The opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has strongly criticized the Local Government Authority’s (LGA) decision to suspend Thinadhoo City Mayor Saud Ali for three months without salary or benefits. The suspension followed an inquiry into complaints submitted to the LGA regarding allegations against the Thinadhoo City Council.

According to the LGA, the action was taken following an investigation into allegations of corruption, misuse of power, and administrative failure. The complaints, filed by a private individual, accused the council of being unable to fulfill its responsibilities, abusing its authority and resources, and acting in violation of the code of conduct for councilors. The LGA stated that its own observations also contributed to the decision.

In a statement released today, the MDP condemned the suspension of both the Mayor and Deputy Mayor, describing the move as baseless and politically motivated. The party claimed the suspension is part of an effort to discredit MDP-affiliated councilors and weaken their influence ahead of the upcoming local council elections.

The MDP noted that the Thinadhoo City Council had fully cooperated with the LGA’s investigation, based on information received from the council. Despite this, the suspension was issued abruptly and without warning.

The MDP further stated that the LGA had not issued any prior instructions or guidance to the Council regarding improvements to its administrative performance, raising concerns about the fairness and transparency of the suspension.

The party accused the government of continuing its efforts to centralize power and undermine the autonomy of local councils. The MDP pledged to support councils through both the People’s Majlis and the courts in resisting actions that obstruct the fulfillment of their legally mandated duties.

Meanwhile, the LGA has stated that the mayor was suspended for failing to ensure that the council operated in accordance with laws and regulations.
