President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has emphasized that the safety and prosperity of the Maldivian people depend on their steadfast adherence to Islamic principles.
Delivering a message on the occasion of the Islamic New Year, the President said that the teachings and actions of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), as reflected in the noble Sunnah, offer timeless lessons for Muslim civilization.
“On every such occasion, the Maldivian people must accept the reality that their safety and prosperity lie in holding fast to the rope of Islam,” the President said. “Every concern in Maldivian society and every prosperity that the people desire can be achieved by adhering to Islamic principles.”
The President called upon the Islamic Ummah to turn to Allah with increased prayers and patience, especially for the unity and protection of Muslims around the world. He highlighted the recent conflicts in the Middle East, stating that the heartfelt prayers of the Maldivian people remain with their Muslim brothers and sisters in affected regions.
“As we wish for peace and safety for the people of Palestine, we pray to Allah to bestow peace and protection upon all Muslim nations in the region,” he said.
Lessons from the Hijra
In his address, President Muizzu drew attention to the Prophet’s migration (Hijra) from Makkah to Medina, describing it as a historic event full of lessons for Muslims at every level; individual, national, and global. He outlined several key principles from the Prophet’s Hijra:
- The Prophet began preparing his mount six months in advance, gathered information from companions migrating to Medina, and secured pledges of allegiance from Medina’s leaders. This demonstrated the importance of long-term planning in achieving success.
- He kept the route of his migration confidential and made deliberate decisions such as placing Ali in his bed and spending three nights in the cave of Thawr to avoid detection. Measures such as assigning Amir bin Fuhairah to erase their tracks show the importance of material precautions alongside reliance on Allah.
- The President highlighted how the Prophet entrusted vital roles to young people and women. Young companion Abdullah bin Abu Bakr brought intelligence updates, and brave female companion Asma bint Abu Bakr provided food during the journey. These actions shed light on the active and significant contributions of youth and women in Islamic society.
- The Prophet’s decision to appoint Abdullah bin Uraiqit, a non-Muslim at the time, as a guide for the sensitive journey is a historical example of entrusting capable, trustworthy individuals, regardless of their faith, with key responsibilities when needed.
Upon arrival in Medina, the Prophet’s priority was to establish brotherhood between the Muhajirun (emigrants) and the Ansar (the helpers), thereby reinforcing unity among Muslims. He also made peace agreements with the non-Muslim communities in Medina, setting an example of harmonious coexistence with people of different beliefs.
“The Prophet’s mission was to build and develop Medina, making it a beautiful, civilized city. To establish and implement an orderly and civilized system,” the President’s message concluded.
