Opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), the oldest political party in Maldives, will celebrate its 20th anniversary with a series of events planned throughout the year.

The anniversary falls tomorrow, and the party has planned a day of activities to kick off the celebrations, including a breakfast gathering with members at MDP’s Dhandikoshi party hub, followed by flag raising and cake cutting ceremonies at various party offices.

MDP Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail said the party will also host an internal football tournament tomorrow and launch a special podcast by its youth wing.

As part of its year long celebrations, MDP plans to hold rallies in each city, starting with the first rally in Kulhudhuffushi on 11 July. A nationwide run, titled "Ran Reendhoo", will be held across all inhabited islands, beginning with a ceremonial torch relay and ending in May next year.

The celebrations will also include an art exhibition, a music show, and an event highlighting the political and social changes MDPis said to have brought to the country over the past two decades.

Fayyaz described the anniversary as a significant milestone, calling the MDP “the architect of many positive transformations in Maldives”.
