Landing craft capsizes in Kaashidhoo Channel, one dead, one missing

A landing craft has capsized in the Kaashidhoo Channel, said Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF).

The vessel belonged to Sifainge Welfare Company Pvt Ltd (SIWEC), a subsidiary of MNDF. Rescue efforts are currently under way as one person still remains missing.

The landing craft "LC 308" was en route to Lhaviyani atoll when it capsized around 10:30 am. The occupants included two MNDF officers, one local civilian, and three expatriates.

Lhaviyani Atoll Hospital said that three Maldivians including two MNDF officers, one local and two expats were admitted for treatment. One Maldivian has passed away in the incident.

The deceased has been identified as Warrant Officer 2 Ali Hamid, from Thaa atoll Hirilandhoo. He was recovered by divers from the Coast Guard First Squadron during the search for two missing individuals, but was later pronounced dead at Lhaviyani Atoll Hospital.

The search for the remaining missing person, a foreign national, is ongoing. MNDF sea and air rescue teams were deployed after the vessel was located.
