A large part of Maldives experienced "feels like" temperatures above 35 degrees Celsius last week, according to data from Maldives Meteorological Service (MET).
The period from January to June typically marks the hottest months of the year in the country, with April usually recording the highest temperatures.
According to MET records, the feels like temperature ranged between 35 degrees Celsius and 39 degrees Celsius across various parts of the country from Tuesday last week to today.
The hottest day of the week was recorded last Thursday. At 11am, the feels like temperature in Male' region peaked at 38.1 degrees Celsius.
While the actual air temperature last week averaged between 24 degrees Celsius and 34 degrees Celsius, the humidity and low wind levels contributed to higher perceived temperature.
Despite the high temperatures, this year has not yet surpassed last year’s peak. On 1 April 2024, the "feels like" temperature soared to 48 degrees Celsius; one of the highest on record. This year has not seen feels like temperatures exceed 40 degrees Celsius on any single day so far.
The "feels like" temperature typically rises above the actual air temperature during this time of year due to high humidity and calm wind conditions.
