President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has proposed a study on offering financial incentives to islands with no tobacco users, as part of broader efforts to promote a healthier society.
In a post on social media, President Muizzu said he had instructed relevant ministers during Tuesday’s Cabinet meeting to prepare and submit a proposal examining the feasibility of depositing a cash reward or incentive into the bank accounts of residents on islands that achieve complete tobacco cessation.
While the President’s Office has yet to release further details, the initiative is part of a wider government push to reduce tobacco use nationwide.
As part of these efforts, the government banned the import of vapes on 15 December 2023. It has also increased import duties on cigarettes and prohibited the import of tobacco products that do not carry proper health warnings.
President Muizzu said the initiative aims to build a healthier generation and reduce the burden of tobacco-related illnesses across the country.
