Former President Mohamed Nasheed, who also served as former President of opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has rejoined MDP tonight after a two year split.
In a special rally held tonight at Sultan Park to welcome Nasheed back to the party, Nasheed delivered one of his trademark energetic speeches at MDP's podium once again.
The rally was held tonight to mark the return of Nasheed and several other members of The Democrats to MDP. Nasheed's closest associates were also present at the event. This includes former MPs Eva Abdulla, Imthiyaz Fahmy, Hassan Latheef, Mohamed Shifaz and Ilyas Labeeb.

Two years ago, on June 21, 2023, Nasheed left MDP and formed The Democrats following strong rifts between him and former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih in the run up to the last presidential election.
Both Nasheed and Solih have announced intent to run in the 2028 presidential election.
MDP decided on April 12 to hold the party's congress before August 15. It is believed that the congress will reach a decision on a candidate MDP will present for the presidential election.
